Cozy Cast Ep. 3 - The Sleepiest of Hockey Podcasts
Welcome to Episode 3 of the From Center Ice Cozy Cast. This one is especially cozy as I am rather tired and allergy ridden. My apologies.
But I'm here to chat about what went down in the hockey world over the weekend. Especially the disturbing drama between the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues and how Blues fans were threatening Nazem Kadri after Jordan Binnington was injured.
I've also got some player signing news and AHL Calder Cup Playoff updates! Happy Monday!

But this is a one hour podcast episode where it is just me talking about what has gone on in the hockey world over the weekend. It is the counterpart to Friday evening's From Center Ice Happy Hour, which is much the same. But it is a way to wind down your week. Comes out Friday evening and I talk about what went on over the week in the hockey world.

So we will start off with the NHL playoffs as per usual. And we will start out East.

We have the Carolina Hurricanes up against the New York Rangers. Three games have been played in that series so far. The Carolina Hurricanes own the series lead to two one. They won both games at home then they shifted over to Madison Square Garden where the Rangers finally one game. But Game Two, which was played in Carolina was won two to nothing by the Hurricanes, which was basically one to nothing. But then Sebastian Aho got an empty netter there with just a few seconds left on the clock. And then of course, game three was won by the New York Rangers by a score of three to one.

And in that game three, we finally had an exciting game out East. I couldn't believe what I was watching. We've had so many boring games from the Eastern Conference so far here in the second round, and then Carolina and the Rangers finally stepped it up for us.

And it started off looking like maybe there would be some more energy, but they tricked us with that in game two, as well. So I didn't want to get my hopes up too much. But by the end of the game, both teams had put in a full effort and Mika Zibanejad, Oh my goodness, he just took over the game came there on home ice. And it took him a while to show up in the first round against the Pittsburgh Penguins as well. But once he did, then the series went severely downhill for the Penguins.

So I wonder if that is going to happen here as well, where the Rangers will start putting in more consistent efforts and really push this series to the limit. And, you know, maybe sneak out with a win. Or the Carolina Hurricanes, will just go back to playing their shut down hockey and just suppress every offensive chance that the Rangers have. I guess we'll have to see.

But I was so happy to see an exciting game finally out East there with the Rangers and the Hurricanes at MSG.

Now, I didn't watch the first game that was on yesterday, which was the Battle of Florida, which I'll get to here.

Actually, that's up next. So let's just transition to that one.

So of course the other series out East is the Florida Panthers up against the Tampa Bay Lightning. That series has also gotten three games so far. Tampa Bay has a three to nothing series lead. They are on the verge of sweeping the President's Trophy winning Florida Panthers out of the second round.

And I didn't watch Game three because I was at a birthday party for a kid yesterday and I figured that would be a lot more exciting than watching the battle of Florida, which has been a complete snooze fest so far.

But Tampa Bay won that game three, five to one. And the Panthers finally scored a power play goal. So there was that which they hadn't done at all in the playoffs so far. They were a ridiculous zero for 25 or something like that. So they finally got on the board on the powerplay. But that was it.

And Brandon Hagel had a very questionable hit on Eetu Luostarinen, and he cross checked him from behind but very close to the end boards. And he just went crashing into the boards which was not good. They originally gave him a major penalty for that, but then downgraded it to a minor, which is ridiculous.

Penalties should not be given out based on if there's an injury or not. And I guess there's not going to be any supplemental discipline handed out to Hegel. That was the news today, at least. I don't know if anything has dropped since I started recording this, but I don't think he's going to be given any supplemental discipline.

So I hope Luostarinen is okay. But that was a dangerous hit for sure. And that being downgraded to a minor is ridiculous.

And it kind of shows flaws in the system here in the NHL, where they say they care about player safety. I mean, we have a whole department of player safety. But they show time and time again that player safety really isn't at the top of mind, really.

And I don't know it's just really frustrating. I don't understand what the Department of player safety is there for. Like I get what it's there for in theory, but what they've shown us isn't anything that is consistent, and I don't know it's just really frustrating. I've gone on rants about this before but they don't seem to really protect the players as they should and it's just very frustrating. So I hope Luostarinen is okay.

The Panthers and Tampa didn't play on Saturday which is when they would usually play. They played earlier in the day Sunday so they have a good old back to back as they also play tonight. Which is preposterous. Back to back in the playoffs is just really weird to me. Because there's no point to have them but it is what it is. I guess this is the NHL schedule and they wanted an early day game yesterday, I suppose.

But let's move out West. I will take a sip of my coffee before we head out West here

And first up in In the Western Conference, we have the Colorado Avalanche up against the St. Louis Blues.

And that series is currently led by the Avalanche two to one. They won Game three by a score of five to two. It was the only game on Saturday night and a lot happened there.

So, early in the game forward for the St. Louis Blues, Ivan Barbashev, hit defenseman of the Colorado Avalanche, Samuel Girard, behind the net. This resulted in an injury to Girard. He fell down to the ice, he did not look comfortable at all. Thankfully, he was able to get up and skate off on his own. But immediately went back to the room. And then as the game went on, we found out that he was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. And then at the end of the game, we got the update on his injury and he has a broken sternum.

I just I can't even visualize that or imagine that type of pain. Your center chest bone. Ooof, a broken sternum for Samuel Girard. He's out for the rest of the playoffs. And that is a big loss to the Colorado Avalanche. He's a good defender for them.

By NHL standards, the the hit was clean. I still didn't like it. Barbashev is a much bigger player than Samuel Girard. He definitely should have pulled up there on the play a bit. But he didn't and Samuel Girard has a broken sternum out for the rest of the playoffs.

But that wasn't the only injury that came from that game. Later on in the contest, there was a loose puck. It was rolling toward the Blues net, and Nazem Kadri was going in to try to poke the puck into the open side of the net. Defenseman for the Blues, Calle Rosen, was trying to bat the puck away or take Kadri out of the play. Goaltender for the Blues, Jordan Binnington, was trying to slide to his left to keep the puck out of the net and make the save. But all of this ended up with Rosen and Kadri running into Jordan Binnington, Binnington going down in pain. The trainers came out talk to him for a bit. He tried to remain in the game he got up started to move around his crease a bit see what his movement was like. And then as he tried to shuffle around the crease, he just fell to his knees in pain.

So he was taken out of the game. Ville Husso came in, played the rest of the game for the Blues.

And then we found out that he [Binnington] will miss the rest of the series with a knee injury. I want to say it was a knee sprain. So two players were taken out of this series in game number three.

And because it was Nazem Kadri involved in the play, things kind of blew up on the internet a bit and it was very not good.

But the comments from the coach and the players after the game when asked whether they believe Nazem Kadri was intending to injure Jordan Binnington - they basically said look at his history. He knew what he was doing. And that was just really disappointing.

Because it was an unfortunate play. It was unfortunate that Binnington got injured on the play. But it wasn't intentional. He was trying to poke at a loose puck and get it into the net to score goal. We see this happen all the time and goalies get run over all the time. But in this play, the goaltender ended up injured and the goaltender happened to be Jordan Binnington, who has a history of his own.

And if you aren't familiar with Nazem Kadri, he's been suspended a few times in the playoffs for hits that were dangerous.

So he was punished for those.

This one was not one of those plays. He didn't serve any supplemental discipline or anything because it was just an unfortunate play that resulted in an injury.

But yeah, the statements from the coach and players were disappointing. But that doesn't compare much to what was being said online about Nazem Kadri.

Alright, fans of the Blues, and probably just internet trolls, because that's what you get online. They were blaming Kadri for the injury to Binnington.

And then it turned into racial harassment, because Kadri is a player of color. And there were racial slurs being thrown around. People were going to his Instagram page and leaving malicious comments on his posts. And then he started receiving threats of physical violence and harm. And it got to the point where the police department had to be called in to be made aware of the situation, and to keep Kadri and the Avalanche teams safe. Apparently, there were cops posted up outside of their hotel.

And it's just disturbing and disgusting that something like this continues to happen. And there's no hockey game that makes anything like this acceptable. There's nothing that would ever warrant making physical threats to a hockey player or anybody. It's just upsetting. Especially since Kadri has had to deal with this type of thing his entire career, and it just keeps going. And I don't know, it's, it's almost like I'm out of words. Just . . . the play wasn't malicious. And he has to deal with getting harassed online, because people can't just accept the fact that he was involved in an unfortunate hockey play.

And they just seem to forget the fact that one of their own players took out an Avalanche player to begin the game. It's it's just disturbing. Really, that's what it really boils down to, and the Avs shouldn't have to call in law enforcement to keep their players safe, just because there was an injury on the ice.

And there there hasn't been a statement from the Blues organization yet. And I feel like what they really need to do is put out something, some sort of statement saying that this isn't acceptable. And it doesn't represent their organization for people to be spewing racial slurs and be threatening physical violence toward a player of an opposing team. Yeah, it's the playoffs. Yeah, it's intense. But that crosses a line.

The playoffs are for the professional hockey players to battle it out on the ice. It is not for fans of said teams to be threatening players off the ice.

That's just . . . how does anybody think that that is okay? I won't ever understand that. And this is certainly not the first time we've ever seen this happen.

I mean, people take losses very personally. And even after World Juniors tournaments, they've been on these kids' social media threatening them because they didn't win a game. Like what?! What are we even doing here? How do you think this is acceptable behavior for grown ass adults to be threatening children? Because they didn't win a hockey game? Like, what?

And then we get situations like this where it happens to be Nazem Kadri. And so not only is there physical threats, but then you have the racial harassment on top of it. How does anybody think that is okay?

And so many people try to push the conversation off to the side and just not talk about it and say, "Well, he could ignore all of these messages, blah, blah, blah." But if you don't have the conversations, then that's why this still happens.

Because people don't want to talk about it. They don't want to condemn it, they don't want to make it explicitly known that this is not acceptable behavior. And it is not okay to do it, they just want to push it to the side say, "just ignore what you see online."

And maybe a lot of these messages could be ignored online. But you never know when one of them is actually going to be serious, and when one of those people is going to follow through with something that they say on the internet. How many times have we seen acts of violence happen? And then you go back and say all of the signs were there, they said they were going to do it on the internet and nobody took it seriously.

So just saying to ignore it is irresponsible and could lead to somebody getting severely injured and that's just not okay.

And I wish the Blues would take it more seriously themselves. Craig Berube was asked about it this morning, he said he had no comment. Like, you have to tell your fan base that this is not acceptable.

And you shouldn't have to be in that position where you have to say this, but they are because it is their fans who are saying these things and threatening a player of the opposing team.

So now they are in the position where they really do have to say something. Otherwise, it looks like they're just condoning this behavior. And if that's the case, then the NHL really needs to step in because that is even further from okay.

So I don't know guys, it's just disheartening that people would continue to act like this. But I don't know.

I'm gonna move on to the next series out west here.

And sorry if I sound all congested, my allergies have been absolutely horrendous. And with the weather being nicer, everybody's doing yard work. So all of the lawn mowing is kicking up all of the pollen and everything. It's not a fun time over here.

But the last series out west is the Battle of Alberta, the Edmonton Oilers up against the Calgary Flames.

And that series has definitely shifted after the flames won Game one nine to six and really looked dominant.

The Edmonton Oilers now have a two to one series lead. They won Game Two by a score of five to three. And then it shifted to Edmonton where they won their first game at home four to one.

And after that first game, Calgary just hasn't really had anything going offensively. It's very weird. They did score two pretty quick goals in game number two, not as fast as in game one. But after that, Edmonton pretty much shut them down and credit to them. They're playing very well defensively and not letting Calgary get anything set up.

But it's almost like the big guys for the Flames also just kind of disappeared. And that was especially noticeable in game number three in Edmonton. They were almost shut out. They got that one goal near the end of the game. So they need to figure out how to get something going there. Especially on the powerplay which hasn't looked very good. They've been given their chances but they can't get set up.

And maybe they're frustrated. I don't know.

But there's also been a very severe lack of Brady Tkachuk since game one. They haven't shown us him cheering in the stands for Matthew. So I don't know if he was at Game Two or game three. But I think that may be throwing them off a bit. They need that Brady Tkachuk magic up in the stands just chugging beers and cheering on his brother.

It seems like once that story died down a bit, then the Flames offense also just died down and disappeared.

So hopefully, Brady will be at Game four in Edmonton cheering on Matthew and maybe the Flames can get some offense going there again.

But also in game number three. There was a collision between Milan Lucic and Mike Smith that resulted in Smith having to go off the ice because he was pulled by the concussion spotters. He did end up coming back into the game, so I guess he's fine.

But Lucic is getting fined for that, I believe. But no suspension or anything. So people were all up in arms about that, but not as much as Kadri being involved in a play, where Binnington was injured. Even though this one was one on one Lucic and Mike Smith.

So you know, good ole hockey fans right?

But also in that series, McDavid's just taking over. Every time he has the puck, it seems like it's going to go in the back of the net, which a lot of times it has. And Jacob Markstrom also has not been very good in this series at all. He was pulled in game three. I assume they go back to him for game four. Mike Smith has made a comeback since being pulled in the first 10 minutes of game one. So I said this before, but it's time for Markstrom to turn his game around and make a comeback now and keep his team in these games. He's made some good saves but he's also given up a lot of pretty tough goals here.

And I can't really blame him for any of McDavid's goals because the guy just makes things happen.

But he really hasn't been great, and if the Flames want any chance to get out of this round and move on to the Western Conference Final, they need Jacob Markstrom to really step his game up. But that's all I have to say about the Battle of Alberta. Game three was kind of disappointing in a way it wasn't as exciting as the other ones where but I would assume that game number four they will come out again and have an exciting game and hopefully Calgary decides to show up to that one cuz they looked rough Tyler Toffoli really needs to step it up. But we'll you'll see

There hasn't been much Blackhawks news over the weekend, but they did announce today that they signed a 23 year old Swedish defenseman Filip Roos to a two year entry level contract.

So there's that we have more defensemen and more Swedish defensemen, which has kind of been a staple of the Blackhawks.

So it was rumored earlier in the spring but they finally made it official today so we will see where that goes. Hopefully he does some good things here. I would assume he gets time in Rockford next season, but maybe he shows up to camp and surprises everybody and makes the NHL squad right out of camp you never know.

And now have some NHL news.

Bryan Rust signed a contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He signed for six years at $5.125 million per season. He's 30 years old. So he will be 36 When this contract is up, which was kind of shocking to me when I looked this up earlier. I didn't realize he was 30 already, but he's spent parts of eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He's played 424 games, he's scored 124 goals and added 145 assists for 270 points. In the playoffs with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he's played 79 games scored 21 goals and added 14 assists for 35 points, which isn't too bad. This season. With the penguins he played 60 games, he scored 24 goals and added 34 assists for 58 points. So he was only two points away from being a point per game player, which is very good. In the playoffs this year, in 7 games, he scored 2 goals and added 6 assists for 8 points. So not bad. I don't know that I would have expected six years out of a contract extension for Rust, but I'm sure that it will be good for both parties.

And they're still working on trying to sign of Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. There hasn't been really any news there other than they've been having conversations and still talking. So we'll see if they end up resigning it would be very strange to see either of those players on different teams. But you got to make the cap work somehow. But Pittsburgh always seems to find a way to figure it out. So I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

We have another extension and this one is with the Toronto Maple Leafs. And Mark Giordano extended his contract for two seasons at $800,000 per season, under a million dollars for Gio. That's just insane. He's 38 years old, so that contract will take him to 40. With the leafs this season, he played 20 games, he scored 2 goals and added 10 assists for 12 points. And he got 2 assists in the playoffs. But after he came over to the Leafs at the deadline, the defense was greatly improved. And I think he made a real impact on the team. And I think it's exciting that he's sticking around for two more years, especially for under a million dollars. Like should the contract not work out you can easily bury that kind of money. And the Leafs really need cheap contracts because they need cap space badly. So that is a beautiful deal for the Leafs we'll see what that means for the rest of the defense. I would assume somebody needs to be moved, which could also clear up some cap space for Toronto. So we will see.

And something that I had in my notes for Friday's Happy Hour but I ran out of time to talk about is a news about the Arizona Coyotes agreement with Arizona State University. And this came out and an article in The Athletic by Shawn Shapiro and Katie Strang.

And that situation just keeps getting stranger and stranger.

So if you aren't up to date on it, the Arizona Coyotes won't be playing in an NHL arena for the next few years. They will be playing at ASU and sharing the ice with the college team while they build another arena.

So the contract that they have with ASU apparently contains a good behavior clause for the owner and the team. So they can't make any like bad news or whatever. Otherwise, ASU has the right to, I guess, nullify the agreement or punish them in some way.

But it gets weirder when it comes to the advertising.

So any alcohol or beer ads must be approved by ASU. ASU has the right to object to any advertisement that doesn't comply with their rules. ASU receives revenue from arena naming rights once they end up Selling the rights to some sort of sponsor. The Coyotes can't sell any temporary advertising that is a competitor or in the same category as whoever ASU sells the naming rights to. The on ice ad revenue goes to ASU. And the Coyotes won't be able to modify the look of the ice surface. So they can't even put their logo at center ice. It's going to remain the ASU logo. So not only are the Coyotes playing in a smaller arena next season, and I think the deal is for three years if I'm not mistaken there. But they can't even put their logo at center ice.

And I, oh, gosh, Arizona. Maybe the deal will work out great for them. It is quite possible that everything will work out and then they will move into their new arena and sell out every night and it'll be great.

But oh, every new piece of information that comes out about this just makes you shake your head. It's ridiculous.

But let's move on from that.

And we have the AHL playoffs, the Calder Cup playoffs.

And we've had some games here in the third round in the AHL. And as a reminder, this round for the Calder Cup playoffs is a best of five series. The next one will be best of seven as well as the Calder Cup final will be best of seven.

So up first we have the Springfield Thunderbirds, who are the affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, taking on the Charlotte checkers who are the affiliate of the Florida Panthers and Seattle, Kraken. And Springfield leads that series one to nothing. And they won Game one, six to nothing. So that's a big old win there.

Up next we have the Rochester Americans who are the affiliates of the Buffalo Sabres up against the Laval Rocket, the affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. And Laval leads that series one to nothing, they won Game one six to one. So some big wins by these first two series here.

Up next, the Colorado Eagles the affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche up against the Stockton Heat, the affiliate of the Calgary Flames. That series has not started yet, so it is zero to zero. But Stockton was approved today, or over the weekend by the AHL Board of Governors for relocation to Calgary so while the fans are busy being excited about their team being in the playoffs and starting up their next round series against the Eagles, they learned they are losing their team because it's being moved to Calgary. So not great timing on that news there. But Calgary wants their AHL affiliate closer so they're moving them to Calgary.

And the final series in the division final is the Chicago Wolves up against the Milwaukee Admirals. The Chicago Wolves affiliated with the Carolina Hurricanes and the Milwaukee admirals affiliated with the Nashville Predators. That series, Chicago leads it to to nothing with two very large wins there. They won Game one by a score of six to two and they won Game Two by a score of eight to two. So I guess the good news here is it wasn't just the Rockford IceHogs playing poorly against them in the last round. They are just scoring a ton of goals and basically scoring at will. Stefan Noesen had a hat trick in game number two, and they just keep rolling right along there in Chicago.

Monday night, tonight, we have game two between the Rochester Americans and the Laval rocket. And we have game one between the Stockton heat and the Colorado Eagles. So that series is finally kicking off.

Tuesday night, we have game two between the Stockton Heat and the Colorado Eagles. So a good old back to back to start their series on a Monday and Tuesday. Not sure what happened there with the scheduling but I guess we'll roll with it.

On Wednesday we have game two between the Charlotte checkers and the Springfield Thunderbirds. We also have game three between the Rochester Americans and Laval rocket, and game three between the Chicago wolves and Milwaukee admirals.

And on Thursday night, there are no games so you get a break there on Thursday.

Now for the week ahead in the NHL.

Tonight, Monday night, we have game four between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. Will Tampa end up sweeping the Panthers or will the series continue? I guess we will have to see. And we also have the Colorado Avalanche against the St. Louis Blues game four. And I'm kind of terrified for that game. I don't want to see any more injuries. And I'm just afraid that we will after what went down last game. So I hope when we meet again for the Happy Hour on Friday, I don't have any bad news to report there.

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, we have the Carolina Hurricanes against the New York Rangers in game four. And we have game four in the Battle of Alberta between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers.
