Drew Commesso Joins Team USA at IIHF Men’s World Championship

Drew Commesso tending goal for Team USA makes a pad save

Drew Commesso, Chicago Blackhawks 2020 2nd round draft pick, tending goal for Team USA

The Chicago Blackhawks and Rockford IceHogs seasons are over. Not to worry, you can still keep an eye on some blooming talent in the Chicago system.

Drew Commesso, selected in the 2nd round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft by the Blackhawks, will be joining Team USA in the IIHF Men’s World Championship tournament starting next week.

The 20 year old goaltender had a fantastic Junior season with the Boston University (BU) Terriers. His 24-8-0 record, .913 save percentage (SV%), and 2.46 goals-against average (GAA) helped the Terriers reach the Frozen Four for the first time since 2015. In his final month with BU, Commesso won seven straight starts with a 1.96 GAA and .928 SV%.

In the post-season, he posted a .923 SV% and 1.94 GAA. To say he was the backbone of his team is an understatement.

Once his season concluded, Drew Commesso chose not to return for his Senior season and signed his three-year entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. He spent time with Rockford IceHogs in their post-season run but didn’t see any ice time.

Now, he’s headed back to the international stage.

Commesso earned some quality experience with Team USA during the 2022 Winter Olympics - blanking China 8-0 with 29 saves in his first start and making 24 stops to defeat Germany 3-2. He finished the Olympic tournament with a .964 sv% and 1.00 GAA. Oh, and he was the youngest goaltender to start for Team USA in the Olympics. No big deal for Drew.

Being no stranger to the international stage, he’s looking to take his team to victory at the Men’s World Championship.

Team USA opens the tournament on Friday, May 12 against the host team Finland. You can find the game on NHL Network at 8:20am CDT.
